What is a Sail Boating

“The goal is not to sail the boat, but rather to help the boat sail herself.” ~John Rousmaniere

A sailboat is a boat that uses sails to power it through the water. You can use sailboats for racing, cruising, or both. Boating is a great way to relax and enjoy the outdoors. There are many things to consider before sailing, such as weather conditions, the type of boat you have, and your skill level. Here's some info to help you get started.

Before you go sailing, it's essential to check the weather conditions. You want to avoid being caught in a storm on the water. It's also important to know what kind of boat you have. Some boats are better suited for certain conditions than others. If you're new to sailing, starting with a smaller boat in calm conditions is a good idea. Once you get more experience, you can move up to larger boats and more challenging conditions.

Once you're out on the water, you need to know a few basic things to sail successfully. First, you need to be aware of the wind direction. The sails must be positioned to capture the wind and propel the boat forward. You must also know how to trim the sails properly to keep the boat balanced and moving straight. Finally, it's crucial to understand how to steer the boat using the rudder. With practice, sailing can be a fun and enjoyable experience.

Living on a Self-Sufficient Sailboat for 10 Years + FULL TOUR

Brian and Karin Trautman have been living on a sailboat for 10 years, and their boat is set up so they can be off the grid in remote places for months at a time with solar and wind power providing electricity, a water maker that turns salt water into fresh water, multiple freezers and loads of storage space for food, and even a small washing machine on board! They've sailed SV Delos – a 53' sloop rig ketch – 83,000 nautical miles which is the equivalent of circling the earth at the equator more than 3 times. Their latest adventures include sailing as a family with their 6-month baby, Sierra, and outfitting the boat with a heater so they can explore the Arctic this summer after several years in the Tropics. Living OFF GRID on a BUDGET Sailboat | S04E24

What unique challenges do we face while attempting to live and sail full time on our 30 foot sailboat? In this episode we answer this question and more as we explain the off grid systems and components of our Allied Seawind 30 sailboat. We dive into sun and heat protection, fresh water storage, rain collection, showering, food storage, cooking, and our galley setup, our wind and solar array as well as our diesel engine, and finally how we stay connected while off grid. How Much It REALLY Costs to live on a Boat (our monthly expenses)

Many people don't like to talk about money. But it’s hard to plan a BIG life change on hypotheticals.  Here are our costs to live & travel on an Off Grid Sailboat. Sure, we had done several google searches on “how much does it cost to sail around the world” but we couldn’t find anything all that helpful (sooo much more info out now).  It was mostly a bunch of hypotheticals or listicles of what to consider. Some things were easier to guess at, like how much we would spend on food (because we’re still going to eat).  But we had no idea what we would be spending on things like fuel, repairs, and maintenance. Over the past four years, we’ve sailed to seven countries and put over 13,000 nautical miles under our hulls. We’ve learned a lot in that time and learned a lot about our spending habits in this new salty life. Everyone always says BOAT is just an acronym for Bust Out Another Thousand.  And in the beginning, it felt that way.  The first year was buying and outfitting for off the grid and it was a total wallet buster! But since then, we’ve been able to stick to our budget pretty closely and we’ve been pleasantly surprised. So, what does it cost to sail around the world? Not many people are willing to share their personal expenses or talk about money (so please be kind).  But it’s hard to plan a big life change on hypotheticals.  So, here is what it costs us to live and travel full time on a sailboat. WHO ARE WE? We’re Jason and Nikki Wynn. We been living #OffTheGrid and exploring the world for almost a decade. Our first six years of #travel were an epic road trip around North America. Now we’re on a #sailing voyage about the world. Did we have any previous sailing experience, of course not! Neither of us is overly talented, smart, rich, lucky, or retired. But that doesn’t stop us from reaching far-flung destinations, having wild adventures, and managing everything that makes living aboard a moving vessel possible. We’re two ordinary people that just so happen to live an extraordinary life. Because... Life is an adventure! Extraordinary moments out there for anyone willing, and wanting, to go after it. Ya know life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness. And this is why we publish our lives on the world wide web. We share in hopes of inspiring you to find your adventure. REALITIES of BOAT LIFE: Watch Before You Buy!

Four years ago, we bought a boat and set out to explore the world with absolutely no sailing experience. Experts and novices all around the world wide web told us we would fail, sink, and die. Well, surprise, surprise, we’re still alive!  Turns out you CAN just go buy a boat and sail about the world. BUT…that doesn’t mean it’s been easy. To say we had (and still have) a lot to learn is an understatement.   Knowing we were clueless, we made a video so we would be able to one day reflect on our newbie expectations and compare them to reality. Looking back at our peculiar beginning now is both comical and endearing.  We really had no idea what was ahead of us. We thought our RV experience would help…and it did…but there is sooo much more to boat life than we could comprehend. Currently, we’re stuck in isolation in Fiji.  Restrictions and closures keep us from exploring so we’ve been sifting through years of videos, mistakes, misadventures, and victories.  Asking ourselves, if we could go back in time what advice would we give ourselves, what would we want to know? So, if hindsight is 20/20, here it is, the realities of living on a sailboat. The stuff we wished we would've known before we bought a boat, and set off around the world. WHO ARE WE?
